WA Online Shopping Grows at Twice the National Average
The latest NAB Online Retail Sales Index reveals that online shopping in Western Australia is growing at 32% a year, twice that of the rest of Australia.
What’s more the growth is strong across most age groups including over 30’s, over 40’s and over 50’s.
WA’s share of the national online retail spend pie was 11.4% or $1.26 billion.
NAB put the remarkable growth down to WA”s strong economy and the booming mining sector.
The total Australian online shopping spend for the past 12 months was $11.1 billion, or 5% of the total retail spend.
NAB noted that while online retail growth had slowed in the past few months to just 15.5% nationally, it’s growth was still way ahead of the traditional bricks and mortar retail sector which only managed 4.1%.
The report provides more evidence, if more was needed, of the challenges faced by offline retailers and the opportunities of online business.
“the significant increase in online spending in Western Australia emphasises opportunities for retailers to tap into new growth markets.”
– David Thorn, Managing Director,
Head of Consumer Sectors, NAB Institutional Banking
“Many of Australia’s biggest online retailers have no bricks and mortar presence, compared with America’s largest online retailers which have a ‘multi-option’ presence.”
Tony Davis, Quantium
